PRODUCTION:

As a PNW Native, my first thought would be to shoot this concept at a venue in Portland. The video is about a FUNKY, accidental TRIP that will employ photo collage, DV footage, stereoscopic wiggle photos and projector video feedback.

HALF A MILLION

WE OPEN ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE CRYSTAL BALLROOM- PORTLAND

A YOUNG ROADIE GIRL TALKS TO HER FRIEND AND HANDS HER A BAR OF CHOCOLATE.

YOUNG ROADIE GIRL:
(EXAMINING IT)
“THIS IS IT? IT LOOKS JUST LIKE NORMAL CHOCOLATE.”

FRIEND
“YOU CAN’T EVEN TASTE IT.
THE PACKAGING IS REALLY GOOD TOO,
ISN’T YOUR DAD A POLICE OFFICER?"

HALF A MILLION STARTS PLAYING...

‘THE SHINS’ CAUSUALLY DRIVING DOWN THE FREEWAY IN THE VAN.

JAMES DRUMS ON THE STEERING WHEEL WITH THE SONG,

THE BAND IS ON THEIR WAY TO A SHOW AT THE CYRSTAL BALLROOM.

THE BAND ENTERS THE VENUE.
JAMES DOES A DOUBLE TAKE.

THE CHOCOLATE BAR
(PSILOCYBIN CHOCOLATE BAR)
IS ON THE TABLE IN THE GREEN ROOM.

JAMES IS CONSIDERING EATING IT...
AS WE ZOOM INTO HIS FACE.

CUT TO:
A PANNING SHOT OF EVERYONE IN THE BAND SITTING IN THE GREENROOM.

EVERYONE IS HAVE A REALLY MELLOW GOOD TIME.

THEY ARE SEEMINGLY UNAWARE THAT ANYTHING IS WRONG.

AS THEY PREPARE TO GO ON STAGE, JAMES NOTICES A
FLICKER OF HAND DRAWN ANIMATION ON A LIGHT
IN THE ROOM NEXT TO HIM.
WE LOOK AGAIN,
BUT THE LIGHT IS SUDDENLY NORMAL... NOT CARTOON.

WE ZOOM IN ON THE TABLE IN THE GREENROOM
AND WE SEE THAT
THE CHOCOLATE BAR WRAPPER IS ALL THAT REMAINS.........

TITLE:
PSILOCYBIN CHOCOLATE WRAPPER
(with an arrow pointing toward the chocolate bar wrapper and blinking)

JAMES WALKS ONTO STAGE AND IS STARING OUT AT THE BRIGHT LIGHTS
WE USE SMALL GROUPS OF PEOPLE CLUSTERED TOGETHER TO FAKE A CROWD.
JAMES SURVEYS THE CROWD AND THEN LOOKS AT THE BAND.

EVERYONE IN THE BANDS EYES LOOK SUPER BLOODSHOT AND DIALATED

JAMES LOOKS BACK AT THE CROWD AND
REALITY FLICKERS INTO BEING HAND DRAWN ANIMATION FOR FEW MOMENTS.
THEN REALITY FLASHES IN PHOTO COLLAGE.

EVERYTHING IS GETTING A LITTLE WOOZEY...

WE CUT TO:
JAMES RUNNING FULL SPEED DOWN A HALLWAY.

HE IS SEEMINGLY HEADED TOWARD THE GREENROOM.

AS HE RUNS... THE WALLS START TO ILLUMINATE AND CHANGE COLORS.

HE SLOWS DOWN AND NOTICES THAT THIS IS STRANGE.

gondry2.jpg
CUT TO:
JAMES TURNS ON THE TV IN THE GREENROOM AND
SEES HIMSELF IN THE IMAGE...WATCHING THE TV.

HE TURNS AROUND TO SEE IF THERE IS A CAMERA BEHIND HIM. WE SEE A BLANK WALL.
NO CAMERA.

JAMES IS CONFUSED AND THEN THE TV STARTS

TO GLOW AND LOOPS HIS IMAGINE INTO A VIDEO FEEDBACK TUNNEL.
AS JAMES STARTS TO COMPLETELY TRIP THE

LIGHTS IN THE ROOM ARE REPLACED WITH

PROJECTORS AND WE STROBE

THROUGH CRAZY WORLDS HALF ANIMATED AND HALF REAL.

WE SEE THE BAND ON STAGE AGAIN FOR THE FIRST TIME.

JAMES IS GONE AND NO ONE IS PLAYING MUSIC.

THE REST OF THE CROWD IS GROWING RESTLESS

JAMES GOES DEEPER INTO HIS TRIP AS THE WORLD STARTS TO CHANGE COLORS

A LETTER SLIDES UNDER THE DOOR OF THE GREENROOM.

JAMES SEES IT AND WE ZOOM INTO THE LETTER FURIOUSLY.

JAMES OPENS THE LETTER AND SOME GLITTER FALLS OUT.

WE SEE JAMES REACT TO THE GLITTER... HE WATCHES IT.
giphy (1).gif

WE CUT BACK TO SEE THE GLITTER IS STILL FALLING IN IMPORBABLY-SLOW MOTION.

WE SEE JAMES FACE WATCHING WITH AMAZEMENT.

WE SEE THE GLITTER AGAIN. IT IS ON THE GROUND AND REALLY BORING LOOKING.

IT'S SUDDENLY ILLUMINATED BY FLORESCENT LIGHTS AND STALE.

JAMES LOOKS AT THE LETTER AND IT READS

Dear James,

This is the Audience. We came here to see a show, but then you suddenly ran off stage.

Everyone is very worried. What is going to happen? Is this it?

You have been in the green room for almost 45minutes.

We are waiting in the hallway outside. We hope you are doing well James.

Sincerely,

The Audience.

WE SEE THE AUDIENCE IS ACTUALLY IN THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE,
SITTING COLLECTIVELY AROUND A TYPEWRITER.

NEXT TO THE AUDIENCE IS A WHITEBOARD FULL OF IDEAS.
BRAINSTORMING ABOUT WHAT TO WRITE IN THE LETTER.

IT SEEMS AS IF THEY WENT THROUGH MANY REVISIONS.

SOME IDEAS FOR THE TRIPPY SCENES:

I made this projection for Alexandra Savior and we shot the whole video in my apartment:

It's so exciting for me to have a chance to write on this.

THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY!
